Some information specifically about Baby Murphy:
Murphy's out of pouch date was July 2nd, 2024. He would be considered about 8 months old currently. He eats Fox Valley wallaby formula about 4 times a day (he prefers to eat every 4-5 hours) He nibbles hay, grasses, roots and eats Happy Hopper purchased from PetPro in Missouri. Murphy is VERY SWEET. He loves to follow you around, likes to be held/carried around out of pouch and in his pouch. He hops in his pouch readily any time you ask. He also loves hopping around the house without his pouch and uses his bed for safety if he feels like he needs it. He is not overy needy, but also not overly brave, he is the perfect combination of the 2. He is currently naked potty training (I can explain that on the phone if you don't know what that is) He also has been hopping out of pouch over night to use the puppy pads to go potty the last couple nights. He can already eat with his eyes uncovered, but he can not put the bottle in his mouth himself just yet.
SOME INFORMATION ABOUT WALLABY JOEYS IN GENERAL (This is to answer some questions I am frequently asked)
Are wallaby Joeys good with kids or dogs?
Before you ask me if a joey is "good with kids" or "good with other animals", I need you to ask yourself the question, "Is my child (or children) good with animals that are fragile and new to our household". The same with your dogs etc... same question, and answer it honestly before you proceed. Joeys do need to be kept away from cats and their litter etc.. as they can die from toxoplasmosis, even as adults .
Also, if you have dogs, I believe that joeys and dogs do okay together, (but we don't have any dogs) AND if we did, I would NEVER trust a joey alone, unsupervised with the family dogs, just because wallabies are prey animals and dogs are predators. I HAVE heard a few stories about the family dog injuring/killing the family wallaby, so I can't reccommend that they are ever left together unsupervised.
Can wallabies be potty trained?
Short answer: not really. They can be puppy pad trained to a point, and some do better than others. I have never kept them in the house full time forever so I am not sure how it goes if you try that. It has worked for us short term, but once they got 8# or so they would poop while they hopped, like a rabbit, and then it didn't work so well. I have never REALLY TRIED though, so I can't say for sure. I don't recommend it just because I feel they really need outside time to hop and jump and just be wallabies. I have heard of some wallabies being trained to go potty outside, like a dog. You would need a fence that goes RIGHT UP to your house in order to do this safely, as wallabies spook easily and if they had the chance to take off, especially if something scared them, they might, and they would be far from home in no time and maybe scared, unable to get home etc.
What diapers do you buy?
I do not buy anything fancy as we don't use them often or for long periods. I buy the cheapest human diapers you can buy. You put them on backward and cut a hole out for the tail. I buy diapers that are much larger than needed so they can be loose so as not to rub on the wallabies skin and cause any irritation. I can show you how to put these on and also what other options there are for naked potty training. (short term, but they move outside much faster if you skip diapers completely) As I stated up above... you can train them to go potty on demand when they are little by using stimulation (which is actually required on new joeys) and eventually you can get them to go on their own in a spot they choose usually, on a puppy pad.... but often as they get older, 8-10# they will start pooping as they hop, and some just aren't great at sticking with the puppy pads. Diapers are used very sparingly though, as they are bad for their skin and can also cause diarrhea by constantly stimulating them to go potty.
What do wallabies eat?
My wallabies prefer browse over anything (branches) but they also eat grasses, hay, and wallaby food called Happy Hopper Mac Flakes bought from PetPro. Mazuri also makes a wallaby food but my wallabies do not like it. I tried it for many years before I went exclusively with PetPro Happy Hopper.
Are Wallabies Legal to Own?
Short Answer: Yes, In MN and MANY STATES wallabies are 100% legal to own as exotic pets. You would need to contact YOUR STATE to find out the answer to this question. I have not run into a state yet that it was illegal to own them. If you do not know how to contact your state, I can find you the phone number for the correct agency if you contact me. You can also call MN Board of Animal Health and they can tell you the correct agency and phone number for your state. (that is how I find it) If you are using Google to find out if they are legal in your state, don't bother and CALL YOUR STATE OR MY STATE instead. I just googled it. On a current "March 2023" list, Google claims they are illegal in NINE states (that's it) but 2 of them on the "illegal" list I have sold to LEGALLY in the last couple years. (just this summer even) How do I know the sale was legal? My vet called that state and got permission for the wallaby to enter the state with their CVI (health certificate.) If it is not legal in that state, permission is not granted.
Do Wallabies make good pets?
This question is asking for an opinion... not a fact. Obviously, I think that wallabies are good pets, or I would not sell them and I would not personally own 12 of them! I LOVE wallabies, but they are probably not for everyone, and this is the reason that I INSIST potential buyers CALL ME on the phone so I can talk to them about wallabies and answer their questions (and ask my own of course)
Are Wallabies expensive to feed?
It costs me about $150 a month to buy Happy Hopper for 12 wallabies. I feel this is much cheaper than feeding many animals, even my several house cats. I do live on 50 acres of land though, and I have access to browse to feed my wallabies every day. Mazuri also makes a wallaby pellet that a lot of people use. My wallabies do not like it. I tried it for about 4 years because I could buy it cheaper and locally (I top dressed the happy hopper with it for this long) My wallabies never developed a taste for it so I gave up on getting them to like it and just order from Pet Pro in MO instead. I buy apple and sweet potato flavored mac flakes from Pet Pro for the wallabies.
For wallaby joeys I currently buy Fox Valley wallaby formula. This is about $240 for 20#. (plus shipping) When you compare that puppy esbilac formula is about $140 for 5#, I also feel this is not terribly expensive. Many people buy Wombaroo, which is about $479 for 22 pounds plus shipping. I have tried Wombaroo twice because I purchased babies that were on it, and I really didn't like the growth rate on it, but that is just me. (I do think part of the issue with the babies growth rates is that the sellers were watering it down due to the price & the confusing way it is supposed to be mixed according to how many grams the joey weighs etc.) If you wish to buy wombaroo it is a perfectly great choice.
How tall should my fence be? How much space do I need for a wallaby?
Personally, I would not keep a wallaby in any fence under 6 feet tall. As far as space goes, wallabies want a lot of space to jump and run so the more space the better. When wallabies hop/ run/ jump they actually have a specific way of breathing that brings more oxygen to their muscles and is essential to their overall good health. I do not really feel a 100% in the house wallaby would get this essential exercise.
